URL encoder & decoder

Encode or decode URLs and components.

Enable JavaScript to use this interactive tool. Paste input, choose options, then copy or download the result, or save it to your notebook.

Example and common questions

Prepare a search value for a URL without turning an ampersand into another parameter. Component mode encodes the value alone. Whole-URL mode keeps reserved URL separators. A literal plus sign is different from a space under these URI rules.

How to encode a query parameter

  1. Choose encode and component mode for a single query value, or whole-URL mode for a complete address.
  2. Paste the text and run the tool; use decode for percent-encoded input.
  3. Copy the transformed string into your application. This tool does not fetch or visit the URL.

Component or whole URL?

Use component mode for an individual value such as a query parameter. Whole-URL mode preserves reserved separators used to structure a URL.

Does + become a space?

No. This tool uses URI encoding rules, not form-urlencoded decoding. A plus sign stays a plus sign when decoded; a percent-encoded space becomes a space.

Does decoding visit the URL?

No. Encoding and decoding transform the string locally. The tool does not open or fetch the URL.

Common errors and limitations

Malformed percent escapes or invalid encoded UTF-8 produce errors. Check that each percent escape is complete and choose the scope matching the text you are working with.
